Memorial : From Hall of Fame Gene Pitney Passes to the Higher Halls ~ Wednesday April 5, 2006 Just after completion of a triumphal concert , "The Rockville Rocket", Academy Award Winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Member as of 2002 passed away, in his hotel suite for the performance, in Cardiff, Wales, of natural causes. In Gene Pitney's music is the triumph over death, since an artist' s works live on forever. And this from me, for Gene's family, friends and fans: ~~~~~~~~~~ Do not stand at my grave and weep! 1960's
Arts/redcross, lifelong, with a musical Father, I was one of those with 12 years of choral, a smattering of several instruments, and knew every quarter-note and lyric to songs rock'n'roll, broadway, sacred and jazz....and some retro favorites from my Parents pop and country.
I loved Gene Pitney and knew his songs too, as soon as they were released, and was a teenager, smart-in-arts and helping at his campus, when I met and began dating my late husband, who lived on the other side of the state...... and near Gene's hometown.
"You didn't know that Gene Pitney is from Rockville Connecticut?" ... we call him the "Rockville Rocket", he declared, incredulous.
"No... I thought all the rock stars came from Philadelphia! Our boring powder blue Sandra Dee little state has a ROCK STAR Wow!"
We had fun with it all, and rejoiced when Gene got to the Oscars, but marriage, military, and corporate took us far from it all, geographically and musically.
Late 1990s
I was back in my home state, widowed and empty-nested, recovered from it all, and doing my arts/redcross full time , when I managed to get good and injured and burned out.
So they sent me to a neat home for ambulatory disabled, in the airy Connecticut Hills , as is done. I saw the sign, tired and in pain...."Rockville"! I heard the beautiful waterfalls! ....memory and love of Rivendell and LOTR, brought the first healing energies....."I think I'm going to be ok!" I'd forgotten there WAS a Rockville. Not any more.... :-)
2000...Y2K
Limping about downtown Rockville recuperating and re-working my artsbiz, so I could live, I mentioned Gene. Everyone in Rockville either went to school with him or was a cousin, or married to one...it was such fun! Additionally, they were dancing secretly about , with crossed fingers, hoping he'd make it, this time, into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. As remarkable as were his achievements, he'd been passed up for it so many times, it would have been funny...but not really.
I joined the Gene Pitney fan club and met Mr.Pitney's PR-guy, Dave McGrath, online. And soon I had also made a page dedicated to him at my website...with a top-link to his Official Site

Gene's nomination to R'n'R H.O.F. was daily talk in town.....
This time he made it !!!!!!!!! ...and I joined the whole town in a cheer that will only be exceeded on the day we catch Bin Laden!
2005
Gene was giving a Benefit Concert at the newly renovated Bushnell Auditorium, in our nearby state capitol, Hartford. I asked to help and did with e-mails and flyers and calls and visits to publicize....so I was invited to the backstage party afterward, with my guests! I finally got to meet his Dave McGrath in person, and
it was lovely!
Of course, the concert was a marvel! Especially now, I will never forget it!
Afterward, ushered backstage, like royalty....I met Mr. Pitney in person, and he autographed his photo on the show program, and I will treasure it always!
I had heard he was suffering "bonz'n'jointz" issues, and great choices in diet and fitness had won a reprieve from surgery, but that surgery was on the agenda for him, soon.
So I was not surprized, especially given my own recent issues of the kind, to see Mr.Pitney, cleverly seated to optimize his comfort and to be polite and
"pseudo-casual" as is done for such social moments.
When I tried to "be the redcrosslady" and look too closely at him, he showed he was definitely paying attention, and very quickly warned me off with a glance.
Effective, and I "bland-ed" back in place, and just resumed enjoying the moment.
We went home that balmy June evening is a happy nostalgic mood...humming his tunes.
2006
The news of Gene's death.....not ok!
Only nineleven here exceeded it for sorrow.
Life has happy and sad.....a sad day.
I am not FROM Rockville , so I took my "second - string " position and found myself redcrosslady-ing online , taking emails from fans round the world and sharing comfort, prayers and memorials, and remain chat friends with one of his Aussie friends till this day. I had to make a second page at my site, with copies of
the notes of condolence.
The chat has gone on, ever since....news of wind-downs in our activities for Gene,
and good news of his family's healing and good spirits. Life goes on....
The thing I love about art, is it's bit of immortality....the things his ordinary fans loved are not effected by death. A comfort.
2007
The one-year anniversary is important.......here in Rockville, GenePitney.org was launched. It is devoted to "Things Gene" and includes music scholarships from other "Rockville Rockets" to come!
I had begun a portrait of Gene, but put it away...not time....I am finishing it and maybe some others now. Maybe for gift or benefit, but I am still poor from my disability and so I will need to work with myself on how to get it out there, and give all I can, without hurting myself.
I am honoring his widow's request: " The thing Gene would have loved most, is for people to enjoy his music, as they can, for always".....thank goodness, Pitneyfans will have his image on video, too!
