And Homecoming for People.....Jubilation!

I went to a VFW fund-raising dinner for a Veteran of the Iraq war, with carbon steel legs below both knees, and a wife and three good little boys! When it was my turn to meet and greet them , I did the polite greetings to the family, but then, the tears came to my eyes, and I blurted to the wife: " God Bless you! The day my husband came home from war, fine and ambitious for our lives, truly, will always be the happiest day ! My words to her all came out in a second, and I blushed and covered my mouth in embarrassment, and blinked the tears away. But the wife was instantly thrilled. She showed that same jubilation and appreciation in her face and in her heart , as I felt not all that long ago...to have her man home, in fine general health, and loving her and their boys. She smiled as big and as true as a smile gets and she thanked me for what I'd said and gestured heartily that I'd better NOT be embarrassed. She did not care, not one jot, that her husband's legs were now carbon steel! They carried her man just fine! He was home and life was good!

You know….She’s a real beauty… She’s about the prettiest thing I guess I’ve ever seen
She’s also a wonder… and she always guards me in my sleep and….. as I dream
She’s really amazing too… She stands guard and she protects all of her children… in their homes
She loves them all and she unites them together,
So no matter what happens…..none of them will ever, ever… feel alone

    (Chorus)

We live in America the great.
    Old Glory waves for freedom
And remember it’s never too late
To stand up with each other
    And fight for what’s right
And God will bless America tonight

American Soldiers… they’re away from their homes and standing up, for all of us tonight
There’re over there fighting …..and they’ll show the world how free we are
And they won’t, give our freedom up to anyone without a fight
And these great heroes… You know, they come from about every walk of life
They ‘re young and old,…… men and women,… with both white and blue collars
But to God in Heaven and America,…. They’re all alike

  • (Chorus)

We live in America the great.
    Old Glory waves for freedom
And remember, it’s never too late
To stand up with each other
    And fight for what’s right
And God will bless America tonight

I pray that someday…once again, there’ll be peace in this old World, but here tonight
As I kneel on these old bended knees and look toward the Heavens
I pray to our Heavenly father, that the rest of the world will do what’s right
And if they don’t… With spread wings of freedom, that Great Eagle will stand with all her might
And she’ll end all suffering….. and oppression… and beside her
We should all stand tall, and help her……. win this fight

    (Chorus)

We live in America the great.
    Old Glory waves for freedom
And remember, it’s never too late
To stand up with each other
    And fight for what’s right
And God will bless America tonight

Airmen MIA From Vietnam War are Identified

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of four U.S. servicemen, missing in action from the Vietnam War, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

They are Maj. Barclay B. Young, of Hartford, Conn.; and Senior Master Sgt. James K. Caniford, of Brunswick, Md. The names of the two others are being withheld at the request of their families. All men were U.S. Air Force. Caniford will be buried May 28 in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C., and Young's burial date is being set by his family.

Remains that could not be individually identified are included in a group which will be buried together in Arlington. Among the group remains is Air Force Lt. Col. Henry P. Brauner of Franklin Park, N.J., whose identification tag was recovered at the crash site.

On March 29, 1972, 14 men were aboard an AC-130A Spectre gunship that took off from Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, on an armed reconnaissance mission over southern Laos. The aircraft was struck by an enemy surface-to-air missile and crashed. Search and rescue efforts were stopped after a few days due to heavy enemy activity in the area.

In 1986, joint U.S.- Lao People's Democratic Republic teams, lead by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), surveyed and excavated the crash site in Savannakhet Province, Laos. The team recovered human remains and other evidence including two identification tags, life support items and aircraft wreckage. From 1986 to 1988, the remains were identified as those of nine men from this crew.

Between 2005 and 2006, joint teams resurveyed the crash site and excavated it twice. The teams found more human remains, personal effects and crew-related equipment. As a result, JPAC identified Young, Caniford and the other crewmen using forensic identification tools, circumstantial evidence, mitochondrial DNA and dental comparisons.

For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO Web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call (703) 699-1169.

  • These are such special times!

There are dangers and difficulties never before faced by the world, nor by Americans in particular.
However, these times have also been a revelation of the true heart and soul of America! We have been given, by these challenges, opportunities to excel at being human, at being responsive to needs outside our own, and real opportunities to be real Patriots...not a story in a book about the American Revolution, or a romantic movie trying to help us to understand that our forefathers', mothers' and children's experiences were very real in their time....but just us, each day, having a special part in history, ourselves!

    "A 9-11 observation"...
"Some time later, the two buildings collapsed, first one, then the other. "The funny thing is, from a mile away on West Broadway, there was no sound. There was no sound when these buildings went down," Nelson said. "
    - sfgate 9-11-01
Author's afterword:"I remembered the same...it was very eerie, and I marvelled at how right it seemed for that moment, and how deadly calm I felt...stunned, I guess...
But there HAD to have been noise... exceeding our range of hearing, ability to compute it...or ...mass madness? Our history books told of "the shot heard round the world",speaking of the official start of the American Revolution at Bunker Hill. I guess 9-11-01 will lay claim to "the Day of the Great Silence".

Songs and poems thought to be very powerful have been written about "Strange Rain", "Strange Fruit" and many others, but eclipsed by the "Strange Snow" at Ground Zero on Nineleven, in my mind forever.

    "The Deck Of Cards"

The media has been full of stories about the Most-wanted Iraqis card deck,
and here a quote from todays CNN online:

"U.S. Central Command announced April 11 it was distributing decks
of playing cards picturing what it called its "most-wanted" Iraqi leaders.
U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Vincent Brooks, Central Command spokesman, said
the cards were given to troops in the field "to ease identification"
when asking Iraqis about the fugitives.
Each card lists an Iraqi leader's name and former title,
and -- if available -- their picture."

I applaud the gimmick, and it will help. The spirit in it is"totally G.I.Joe".

I wondered if anyone remembered another "The Deck Of Cards", from WWII.

My Father counted the recording of the song/reading among those in his collection.
I learned it but forgot it after all these years. But I remember its message:
The chaplain stopped halfway up the aisle of the makeshift battlefield chapel,
and stared at one of the worshippers. "Son, he said, you are flipping through
a deck of cards in church. This in not really the place for card-playing.
"Father", said the soldier, "I was hoping you'd notice. The field chaplain at
the battlefield I just came from, sat with us during a lull in the battle.
We did not know how we were to do a prayer service, since the Bibles had been
damaged in the fighting, but the field chaplain asked to borrow someone's
deck of cards. He gathered us around himn, and began. He browsed through the
deck, spreading the cards before us:

" The Ace of Hearts is God the Holy Spirit, who is with us always, The King is
God the Father and the Jack of Hearts is our Jesus; the Queen His Blessed Mother,
and so on...then he went on to talk about the numbers 1-10 symbolizing the
Ten Commandments, and the Four Suits stood four the Evangelists, Matthew, Mark,
Luke and John; the number seven cards were the seven sacraments , the number
three cards symbolized the Holy Trinity, and so on..."

The recording in my Father's collection continued for a full 3+ minutes,
with the Vaughn Monroe-ish voice respectfully reciting and a single organ
playing simple sacred chords in the background. I don 't remember most of the
words and the quote, above, is a paraphrase. As a girl it opened my mind to the
concept of all roads lead to God and God is everwhere, not just in my church or
catechism. And I never forgot it. This paragraph is a data request. If you know
of this recording or its lyrics cited accurately, I would like to add it to my
    patriotic lyrics page."

One final "The Deck Of Cards" came to mind ...maybe one with the faces of
our Coalition Team Leaders, and their contributions in words, action, manpower
and money...or one with the list of the military divisions employed in this
Operation Iraqi Freedom, which lists their number, function and the number of
    casualties suffered by each.

But for now, may "The Deck Of Cards"of the Iraqi Most Wanted serve its
purpose well, and I only wish there was room on the cards to enumerate the number
of deaths attributed to each of them. Our President and other Coalition Members
have known about the atrocities committed by our enemy for a long time, but
dipolomatic laws and fear of damaging our own case legally, prevented
public report and accusation...and in some cases of the horrors being uncovered
by our Liberation troops, no one knew the extent of the Hussein regime
    murderousness.
I was informed, via tv commentary that Saddam Hussein
assasinated one of his own sons at a public rally, accusing him of plotting
against him. But have not found it mentioned since. If anyone has verifiable
information on this point,as well, please let me know.

Immigrant gardeners provide seed money for college scholarships

    Tyche Hendricks, Chronicle Staff Writer

    Monday, October 15, 2007

Catalino Tapia came to the United States at age 20 with $6 in his pocket. He worked hard, as a baker and a machine operator, and eventually started his own gardening business. He and his wife bought a home in Redwood City and raised their two sons, putting the eldest through college.

Though he never studied beyond sixth grade, Tapia was so inspired to see his son, Noel, graduate from Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley that he decided to help other young Peninsula people make it to college. Now 63, the Mexican immigrant is giving back to the country he says has given him so much.

With legal help from his son, Tapia established a nonprofit corporation, the Bay Area Gardeners Foundation, and recruited a dozen other immigrant gardeners to join the board. This year, the foundation gave out nine scholarships of $1,500, almost double what it distributed in 2006, its first year.

With his callused hands and burly shoulders, the Michoacán native does not fit the typical image of a philanthropist. When Tapia approached the Silicon Valley Community Foundation for a grant to help strengthen the fledgling organization's capacity, he was told the agency had never seen a foundation started by gardeners before. "Well," he replied, "We'll be the first."

When most people think of a philanthropist, they are likely to think of a society matron or millionaire business mogul, said Manuel Santamaría, a program manager at the community foundation.

"In fact, taking tamales to the church potluck or reading in the classroom - all those little acts are philanthropic," said Santamaría. "Philanthropy means love of humankind. We've got to spin a much better view of what immigrants are contributing. ... And Catalino is taking it to a different level."

Tapia expresses a vision - of passing along the prosperity he has earned, drawing community members together for a shared goal and being accountable for the well-being of the next generation - that is eminently philanthropic.

"I believe the education of our young people isn't just the responsibility of their parents, especially in the Latino community where some parents work two or three jobs," he said. "It's our obligation as community leaders, because young people sometimes wander without guidance."

Many immigrant parents arrive with little schooling and don't always understand the importance of college, he said, but children who get an education can contribute much more to this country than those who don't.

One beneficiary, Gloria Escobar, 19, figured out early that college would be the key to her success. Her parents, educated as far as middle school in Mexico, were supportive but could offer little advice or financing. So Escobar, who lives at home in Redwood City, followed her sister to community college in San Mateo County. But the architecture classes she sought weren't available there.

A scholarship from the gardener's fund allowed her to enroll as well at City College of San Francisco - and cover the cost of the commute - where she is earning architecture credits that she hopes will help her transfer one day to Cal Poly or UC Berkeley.

"This was the first scholarship I've gotten," said Escobar. "It's something that would benefit a lot of kids. I know a lot of people in college who want to transfer, but they can't afford to."

At Cañada College, just over the hill from Tapia's home, most students, like Escobar, juggle their studies with part-time or full-time jobs, said President Tom Mohr. Even a modest scholarship can allow a student to spend fewer hours working and devote more time to studying, perhaps taking 12 units a semester instead of six, he said.

The Gardeners Foundation is a wonderful example for the students, Mohr said. "It's extraordinary to see a body of people who are struggling to make it in America also struggling for other people's children. ... Is that not grasping the American dream?"

Tapia is pleased to have a burbling fountain, a grandfather clock and a view of the bay from his Redwood City ranch house, but material comfort has never been enough to satisfy him. So over the years he and his wife, Margarita, have been involved with holiday food drives, neighborhood park cleanups, the North Fair Oaks Community Festival and now the scholarship fund.

Sitting at his dining room table, he tried to describe what prompted him to start the scholarship fund. He sprang up and walked into the den, where Noel's three diplomas are hung on the wall in great gilt frames: a B.A., an M.A. and a J.D.

"When he got his law degree, I was floating in the clouds," Tapia said. Suddenly his eyes brimmed with tears. "The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to do something. I got this idea that I could help other students go to college."

The gardeners raise money for the scholarship fund by hosting dinners and requesting donations from local businesses and their gardening clients. When it came to writing thank you notes, though, Tapia was self-conscious of his blocky grade-school penmanship, so he recruited neighborhood teenagers to help him.

San Mateo resident Valerie Constant, who has employed Tapia as her gardener for five years, said she and her husband now make annual contributions not only to Stanford, their alma mater, but the Gardeners Foundation.

"We've given to Catalino ... because we think it's such a fabulous thing he's done," she said. "I wish more people knew about it."

Another gardening client and scholarship donor is so excited about the fund, he's planning a cocktail party to invite his wealthy friends to donate.

The Gardener's Foundation is not the only source of private scholarships for Peninsula teens. The Silicon Valley Community Foundation administers several, as does the Chicana Latina Foundation in Burlingame. Then there are the big, competitive grants like the Gates Millennium Scholars and the Dell Scholars programs.

The Gardeners Foundation is one of the few, however, that doesn't ask whether a student is a legal resident. And that's a blessing for many immigrant students whose parents brought them to the United States illegally.

Tapia enthused about one such student, the daughter of a janitor and a hotel maid, who is attending Mills College with help from the foundation, among other scholarships.

"She has such intelligence and a tremendous desire to succeed," he said. "I think one day, I hope it happens, this country will open opportunities for students like that."

In Washington, Senate Democrats hope for a renewed debate later this fall on the DREAM Act, a long-stalled bill that would offer legal residence to undocumented students who grew up in the United States and are bound for college or the military. Closer to home, a bill dubbed the California Dream Act would have made some state financial aid available to undocumented college students, but Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed it Saturday.

For Latino high school students, the main group Tapia's fledgling foundation has reached so far, the need is great for financial help with college. Only 13 percent of U.S.-born Latino adults in California have a bachelor's degree, according to the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California. For immigrant Latinos, the figure is 5 percent.

Alberto Urieta, an 18-year-old from East Palo Alto, was born in the United States. His father, an electrician, died in an industrial accident when Urieta was 12. His mother works two jobs, at a day-care and a Red Lobster restaurant. Though frequent moves forced Urieta to switch schools several times, he managed to keep his grades up, and last month he started his first quarter at UC Santa Cruz, where he hopes to major in molecular biology.

"I guess I've got my father's ambition, because he came to this country and he got his high school education. I want to better myself just like he did," he said. "To receive a scholarship is so much help because the books are so expensive, but also it gives us a feeling that we're not alone; that someone wants us to make our dreams a reality."

That's what Tapia had in mind when he started the foundation from his dining room table.

So far the Gardeners Foundation has only publicized its scholarships through schools and community colleges in San Mateo County, but it is open to low-income students around the Bay Area, Tapia said. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or better and commit to doing 20 hours of community service annually, he said.

"It's a little seed we're planting," he said. "And it will eventually grow a garden of students, and it will flower and bear fruit." Resources

Intended or not, the poem layout appeared to take the form of a flag.

    our flag

    by kathryn granger smith

colors of red white and blue
how my heart skips a beat
when my eye gazes at you
as i see men carrying you high
my mind dwells on thoughts of you in days gone by.
my mind's eye sees you carried forth in foreign lands.
and my brothers and sisters fighting for what you stand.
i see the shores of france and germany and the countless souls who fought to keep
our country free. i see the shores of japan and the shores of the philippines in
world war ii and the shores of other countries that were touched upon too. i see
the conflict of korea and vietnam, too and i watched in mind's eye the men who
carried you through blood-torn fields and stars of glory too. i watched the men
who placed you on the moon, hoping they would return home soon. all those men who
carried you straight and tall and all who died and fought for the freedom of us
all. when i see others spit and burn, i realize they could never concern
themselves with love of god, country and flag. when in the dust they let you fade
and drag. but when they burn stars and stripes of red, white and blue, and stand
up before all and declare their right to do. my heart becomes inflamed and in my
heart and soul i feel the shame. how dare they do this to you, oh silent one of
glory, the grand old red, white and blue. but no matter how hard they try, they
can never destroy the ideals for which you stand. the love of god and country and
    freedom for all of man!

my poem my thoughts my feelings about the flag of our great country always honor
her many fought and gave their lives for what she stands

    WINNING FEELS BETTER

FOR A COMMITTED COMPASSION/RESPONSE PERSON AND ARTIST ALL MY LIFE, THE FOLLOWING IS VERY FRANK. PLEASE FORGIVE ME IF YOU FIND THIS OFFENSIVE. ITS MOTIVES ARE THE BEST!

LIKE MY TEAM MATES OVER THE YEARS, I DO NOT LIKE WAR, BUT AT THIS WRITING , MAY 10, 2003, I MUST SAY,
"THANK YOU, MISTER PRESIDENT...WINNING FEELS BETTER!"

WE SHOULD SEE, FROM THE IMPORT OF THE CURRENT EVENTS A LONGTERM RESTORATION OF OUR NATIONAL, AND SOME INTERNATIONAL HEALTH, MENTAL AND PHYSICAL, SOCIOLOGICAL, TOO:

WHEN VIET NAM HAPPENED AND WE HAD TO QUIT AND LET THE COMMUNISTS TAKE OVER VIET NAM, ALL THE SLOPPY DEGENERATING THINGS HAPPENED TO AMERICA, AS WELL:
DEMONSTRATIONS AND DISRESPECT OF THE FLAG, EVEN AVERAGE CITIZENS DISGUSTED AND "DROPPING OUT" OF NORMAL "PROUD TO BE AMERICAN" LIFESTYLES, REBELLION OF EVERY KIND IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE, AND THE BABY BOOM MAKING IT ALL SO MUCH LOUDER! AS A NATION, WE FELT ANGRY AND DISAPPOINTED WITH OUR COUNTRY FOR DOING SUCH A BAD JOB IN VIET NAM, AT THE COST OF SO MANY LIVES! AS THE WAR ENDED, THE MEMORIALS WERE NECESSARY TO SUGGEST A STOP TO THE DISRESPECT OF VIET NAM WAR VETERANS, A POPULAR TREND IN THOSE TERRIBLE DAYS, AS WELL.

    LOSING A WAR IS DISGUSTING!

AFTER A WHILE, THE DEMONSTRATIONS STOPPED, BUT OUR ENTIRE SOCIETY SHOWED BEHAVIORS DOCTORS WOULD CALL "DEPRESSED"...DRUGS, SLOPPY SEX, TOO MANY DIVORCES, ANGER AND BAD CIVIL RIGHTS METHODS... PEOPLE WORE JEANS TOO MUCH, AND EVEN THE TEACHERS BEGAN TO TALK LIKE WISEGUYS, AND SAY "KIDS" INSTEAD OF "CHILDREN". THESE BEHAVIORS ARE CLASSICALLY CALLED THE BEHAVIORS OF A DEPRESSED OR UNHAPPY PERSON. AND IT WAS OUR WHOLE COUNTRY BEHAVING SO "BROUGHT DOWN"!

IT IS NOT ONLY OUR MILITARY AT THE WAR FRONT WHO MUST WIN OR DIE!

NOBODY KNEW WHAT TO DO, BUT, "GOD BLESS AMERICA" - OUR GENERATIONS FLOOD OF PROBLEM -SOLVING IDEAS BEGAN TO SURFACE...EVEN THOSE OF US WITH STRONG AND GOOD PATHS FOUND NEED FOR SOME OF IT...NEW RESPONSES TO NEW PROBLEMS FOR WE, "THE CHILDREN OF THE TWENTYFIRST CENTURY"(A REGULAR TV CATCHPHRASE'50S...THE SUPERMAN TV SHOW?).

I FELT LIFE HAD DEALTH ME SOME AMAZING LEFT-HANDED BLESSINGS. THE YEAR AFTER A PERSONAL SETBACK FORCED MY GIFTED STUDENT SELF TO LEAVE CAMPUS, THE CAMPUSES BLEW UP,AND MY HOME WAS AN UNOFFICIAL "FREESPACE" TO SOME WHO WERE CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE.

TO BE "OFF WITH MY HANDSOME PRINCE", WITH NICE WORK AND GREAT LOVE TO BUILD AND SHARE, MADE ME FEEL SPECIALLY BLESSED, WHEN SO MANY OF MY AGEPEERS WERE WANDERING AND LOST IN THE SOCIOLOGICAL UPHEAVALS OF THE LATE SIXTIES AND EARLY SEVENTIES.

    LOSING FEELS TERRIBLE!

DURING THOSE YEARS, TOO, I WAS GLAD TO BE WORKING IN NEW DAYCARE IN GOOD WHITE-COLLAR WORLD WITH MY LATEHUSBAND, AND A LITTLE OUT OF THE WAY, IN A TOWN WITHOUT A BAR. AT OUR SCHOOLS, PEOPLE STILL SAID "CHILDREN", AND IT STILL SOUNDED LOVING AND RESPECTFUL. LOVE IS AN ACTION WORD, AND THE MESSAGES WE WERE BOUND TO GIVE THE LITTLE ONES NEEDED TO COMMUNICATE OUR LOVE AND RESPECT AND DESIRE TO CREATE A CLIMATE IN WHICH THEY COULD LEARN AND GROW, WITHOUT FEELING OVERWHELMED BY OUT OF CONTROL GROWNUPS.

WHEN WE SUFFER A CATASTROPHE WITH THE YOUNGSTERS ON BOARD, ITS PAIN IS MULTIPLIED BY THE INESCAPABLE EFFECT ON OUR CHILDREN.

THE NATIONAL DEPRESSION NEEDED RESPONSE: PERHAPS WE WERE NOT SO HOPELESS AND ABANDONED AFTER ALL - AND WE GOT BUSY. WE SALVAGED ALL OF THE GOOD WE COULD FIND AND GOT BUSY WITH NEW IDEAS, AND NEW ACTION...PHYSICAL FITNESS HELPED, BRINGING WHOLESOMENESS TO THOSE "HIT THE BRICKS" DAYS! I WILL NEVER CRITICIZE THE JOGGERS. THERE WAS SOMETHING SPARKLING AND LIKE NEW HOPE IN THEIR DEMONSTRATIONS. MY BROTHER BECAME ONE OF THEM, AND ONCE AGAIN, GAVE ME CAUSE TO BE PROUD. WE WERE SWIMMERS, TENNIS AND GOLF...BUT I RAN A LITTLE BIT AND THE CHILDREN DID A LITTLE OF IT COMPETITIVELY...BUT MY BROTHER WAS THE CHAMP IN IT, AND HIS PHILOSOPHY INSPIRED US, AS WELL! CAREGIVERS, SENSITIVES, HEALERS AND ARTISTS CAN BE TOO PASSIVE, AND LOSE THEIR LIGHTS....THE NEW PHYSICAL FITNESS BECAME A FAVORITE, SINCE IT HELPS KEEP IT SPARKLING! AT FIRST SHOCKING, MY BROTHER'S BEAUTIFUL "AGE OF AQUARIUS" AQUARIAN WAYS REALLY CAME THROUGH, IN MY TWENTIES TO INSPIRE MY MORE TRADITIONAL SOUL IN MY OWN WORK... I BECAME JUBILANT WHEN THE INNOVATORS AND TRADITONALISTS FOUND THE RHYTHM AND PACE OF THE LIFE THING...AND A DECENT STRIDE, IN SPITE OF THE DIFFICULT START. MODERN PROBLEM - SOLVING MADE IT EASIER FOR ME, IN THE YEARS OF EARLY PARENTHOOD AND MANY CHILDREN'S GROUPS. I WAS ABLE LEAD MY LITTLE ONES SAFELY ALONG THROUGH THE REAL PROBLEMS OF TODAY'S WORLD, WITH CREATIVE SOLUTIONS TO THE CHALLENGE OF NEW SPECIAL PROBLEMS WE FACED. SINCE IT HELPED ME, I ORGANIZED AND/OR TAUGHT SEVERAL DISCIPLINES IN FITNESS TO CHILDREN'S GROUPS AS A MOMMY.

I THINK IT STARTED WITH "YOU MIGHT LIKE TO RUN AROUND THE HOUSE THREE TIMES, SINCE IT SEEMS TO BE DIFFICULT TO ENJOY YOUR SEAT AT THE TABLE...

GOD BLESS HAIM GINNOT, FAVORITE ON THE SPOT NON-DESTRUCTIVE SOLUTION-MAKER.

DOCTORS STILL PRESCRIBE.."GET OUT AND RUN AROUND THE BLOCK"- GET MORE ACTIVE -FOR DEPRESSION AND MANY PHYSICAL AILMENTS.... EVEN THE MOST ELDERLY HERE ARE ENCOURAGED TO AT LEAST WALK AROUND THE BLOCK FOR THE HEART AND LUNGS.

WE RESURFACED, AND BY THE TIME OF THE BI-CENTENNIAL, WE WERE SAID TO BE "OVER THE TOP"..."CELEBRATE"!
DID THE EXTRA WORK TIRE US? OR WAS IT A BILL TO PAY FOR THE HEALING OF THE SEVENTIES, AND THE CELEBRATION...."PAYING THE PIPER"? WHATEVER THE CAUSE, WE FOUND OURSELVES "JOGGING TWO TIMES" WHEN THE END OF THE CENTURY RECESSIONS HIT US, AND VIOLENT EXTREMES, LIKE ONE MORE WAVE OF TOUBLE TO CONFRONT.

JUST WHEN WE THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE TO GO IN THE WATER...THE EIGHTIES

TERRORISM AS A BYWORD? NEVER, IN AMERICA! AND YET THE NINETIES, BEGINNING WITH THE WAR IN IRAQ, A SERIES OF RECESSIONS, AND YET THE NEW HOPE AND NEW LIGHTS OF A NEW CENTURY APPROACHING AT Y2K. I CHEERED MY GROWNUP CHILDREN AND FELT COMFORTED BY THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS AND GOOD CHOICES, THEY HELPED IN THOSE YEARS, WHEN WIDOWHOOD AND FINANCIAL SETBACKS AND MIDLIFE HEALTH INSTABILITIES FRUSTRATED MY OWN LIGHTS AND GOALS. STILL, WE SEEMED TO BE MUDDLING...WE NEED TO DO IT AND YET WE'RE NOT DOING IT... NOT GOOD...WHY? MANY OF US FELT SOMETHING LIKE 9-11 COMING FOR SOME TIME...EVEN THOSE OF US WITH NO GEO-POLITICAL SKILLS OR INTEREST....THE FEAR BECAME SICKENING AFTER A TIME.

THE INEVITABILITY OF IT. AND NO ONE WISHES TO BE A DOOMSAYER... VERY UNPOPULAR, AND YET...AND THEN IT CAME...THE DAY OF WRATH...

I BOTHER NOTING ALL OF THIS BECAUSE TO FULFILL OUR BEST DESTINY, TO MEET THE OBLIGATIONS TO EXCELLENCE, THAT AMERICA, SO GIFTED, MUST BEAR...WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO KEEP THE SHIP SAILING ABOVE THE WAVES, THE FLAG FLYING...AND WE COULD NOT DO IT... VERY SCARY...

WHEN 9-11 HAPPENED, HOWEVER DETERMINED TO MUCK ABOUT...WE HAD A CLEAR PATH TO TURN AROUND AND FIGHT, AND WIN...AND LIFE IS AS DIFFERENT FOR MANY AS IT IS FOR PEOPLE THE NIGHT THEY MEET THEIR ONE, TRUE LOVE...AND MUCH REMAINS TO BE SEEN...BUT, FOR NOW...THIS IS SURE!

"THANK YOU, MISTER PRESIDENT...WINNING FEELS BETTER!"NOT ONLY FOR THE AMERICAN CITIZEN, BUT FOR MANY IN THE WORLD WHO ARE FREE AND LIVING THE BASICS OF A LIFE AGAIN.
