At the meeting, when the purpose of these representatives became clear, one of the Connecticut leaders blew out the candle on the table of the meeting house and, under cover of the darkness, ran out the door, grasping our Sacred Charter in hand, and hiding it in the hollow of a nearby oak tree. And the rest is history. Our freedom was saved with that charter, the representatives walked out and the tree that hid the precious charter was honored for its service. Today we know it as the Charter Oak. It lived to a ripe old age, but burned down in a fire a century ago and its location is marked by a small monument. The Charter Oak may have been gone, but not before it fathered many offspring, called "scions", some of which stand today as sentinels before our State Capitol in Hartford, a fine remembrance and re-iterration of Freedom and Strength, now and always.
